Ancient Egypt Project Choice Board
Below you will find the directions for each part of your Choice Board for this units assignment.
You only need to choose 1 of the 4 presented to work on / create that will be due Monday, Sept 28th (1st Block) & Tuesday, Sept 29th (6th Block) by the end of the day. All submissions for the assignments will be through the Google Classroom. Please read through the directions below for directions and instructions on how to upload your assignment.
Design Your Own Pyramid
Before you begin this assignment, you need to research a famous pyramid and study their layout and the kings tomb/chamber. What was left in there? How was it laid out? You need to use those influences from your chosen pyramid to help you design yours. You do not need to replicate exactly what pyramid you chose.
For this assignment I want to see you design and draw out "plans" for your own personal pyramid. Make sure to have fun with this, be creative while linking it back to what we had learned about the pyramids. Below are the list of requirements I would like to see in your projects.
Drawn layouts for each floor you would like to see built. You should have a minimum of 2 floors but an open maximum. That means you should have at least 2 floor plans of each floor/layer of your pyramid. Make notes on the drawings of what each room is and why you made your choices in design.
You need to have one exterior drawing of your pyramid along with any ramps or decorations.
You need one cross section drawing of the pyramid showing the different layers. Please note that not all your passages could be seen in your cross section, but that is ok.
Lastly, you need to have a zoomed in layout of how you want your burial chamber laid out. Make sure to include details of design and art found in there.
To submit your work using a Google Slideshow,
Start your Google Slides with images of the pyramid with art information (name, date, dynasty, and location) that you were inspired by.
You will upload your pictures of your drawings into the Slides.
You can add more information to the images with text boxes and arrows to help explain your design. Make sure you are using vocabulary learned from the earlier informative slides.
Afterwards, you will submit your Google Slides into the assignment in Google Classroom.
Recreate an Egyptian Temple with Found Objects
For this assignment, you will begin by research one of the many Egyptian temples found all over the country. Make sure to look at multiple images of the structure before planning out your recreation of it with found objects. Ask yourself where did visitors enter? What would have been their feelings or attitudes walking into that temple.
After your quick research is done and you have images saved of your chosen temple, you will begin to gather found objects around your house. You DO NOT need to go buy anything for this. Be creative and think outside of the box on what could be used to build your temporary sculpture/model.
Using your images a reference layout what the temple looks like using the objects you have found around the house.
Remember to think of scale
After you have constructed your recreation, you need to take multiple pictures or even a video of your model.
Upload those photos in to a Google Slideshow, starting with an image or two of your chosen temple with art information (name, date, dynasty, and location).
Once you have uploaded your photos, use text boxes and arrows to help illustrate what each section is.
Submit your slideshow to the assignment section in Google Classroom.
Kings Treasure Research Presentation
For this assignment you will be researching one of the many discoveries that were excavated by archaeologist. Your goal is to show off what was found the the these discoveries such as tombs, pyramids, temples, or large artifacts. I recommend starting here to begin your search. CLICK HERE
Once you have found a discovery, you start compiling information about it. When was it built/created? Where was it located? Who was the pharaoh, king, or queen that built it? What else was found with it?
Next you will create a slideshow of images and information about the findings. I would like to see the slideshow be between 8 to 12 slides long.
Each slide should have an image of the discovery along with a description of what we are seeing and what it represented to the king/queen.
I will leave it up to you on what you feel the viewer of the slideshow will want to know about that discovery. Remember the more details the better!
Lastly, try to tie what you have learned in class thus far into your slideshow to help make connections of dates, locations or figures.
Once you have finished with your slideshow, you will upload it to the assignment section in the Google Classroom.
Draw Your Name Cartouche
For this assignment, you will be drawing a large version of your name in an Egyptian Cartouche. This needs to be in color and fill up one page of your sketchbook. You can either do one large one of your first name or 3-4 smaller ones with a first, middle, and last names. You will follow the directions below on how to lay out the cartouche and turn your name into hieroglyphs.
A cartouche is an oval frame which surrounds the hieroglyphs that make up the name of an Egyptian God or royal person. It represents a looped rope which has the magical power to protect the name that is written inside it. A cartouche was meant to protect against evil spirits both in this life and the afterlife. It can be arranged both horizontally and vertically depending on the best layout for its design.
To create yours you begin by drawing out the rope that outlines of your cartouche(s). You do not need to fill the outside full of small hieroglyphics if you do not.
In the example cartouche they have enclosed the hieroglyphs that spell out the sounds of the name 'Michael'. Note that although there are seven letters in the name 'Michael', there are only four basic sounds 'M - I - K - L'. Therefore they only need to use the hieroglyphs that represent those sounds.
Hieroglyphs should be arranged to create interesting designs instead of the straight lines that we use to arrange our letters and sentences.
Cartouches are usually positioned vertically but they can also be positioned horizontally to make them fit more comfortably into a design. The arrangement of the hieroglyphs inside is then reorganized to accommodate the horizontal layout.
Once the outline is done, you will fill it in with colored pencil. To make the outlines stand out, you can go over it with a fine tip black marker or Sharpie.
Reminder: you are either making one large (full page) cartouche of your first name OR three to four smaller cartouches with your first, middle, and last names which will fill up the page with all 3-4.
You will take a picture of your cartouche out of your sketchbook and upload that into the assignment section of Google Classroom. 21
