Project Outline
(Note: This outline is subject to change due to time constraints or expansions. Make sure to follow the given deadlines by the teacher in order to receive full credit for assignments.)
Part 1: Research, Art Critique, & Project Plan (Week 1)
Research
Your research must be thorough and comprehensive. You must choose an artist that has or is changing the world of visual arts. They should have shown work at galleries or have work displayed in museums. I do not want to see artists found on Pinterest or Instagram only. You are to find two (2) sources of research (websites, books, journal entries, or newspapers). Both sources need to be cited in MLA format at the bottom of the page.
Your first paragraph needs to focus on the life and eduction of the artist.
Your second paragraph will focus on their artwork (mediums, inspirations, showings, & awards), and what makes them such an influential artist during their time.
Critique
The critique of the artwork must be based on research found online, in journals, or books from the library or art resource shelves in Room 107. This critique is about the artwork and not about the artist. This critique will be broken up into three sections.
Formal Qualities & Analysis should describe the artwork using the elements and principles of art and postmodern principles. Then analyze how those elements and principles are used to help convey the artists motif (theme or message).
Function & Purpose is where you will explain why the artist created the work and what purpose the work has for the community when it was made. You must explain the motif (message or theme) of art piece and back it up with evidence (signs, symbols or imagery) from the work. Lastly, you need to compare and contrast how the function and purpose of the piece has changed over time.
Cultural Significance is where you will describe how this work was influenced by the culture, sociopolitical, and history of the time. In this section you will explain how the artist's life and world around them affected the making of the artwork. You need explain how that environment is different or similar to today. Lastly you need to state the role the artwork had in the culture of the time (if any) and what it looks like now in today's culture and art history.
Citations and Image Information is needed for this section now. You need to include 2 citations that you used to research your artist's artwork. This needs to be in MLA format. You also need to include a image or detailed sketch of the artwork along with the artwork information.
Project Plan
You are to create a project using inspiration from your chosen artist. This inspiration can come from their chosen medium(s), cultural background, theme, inspiration, technique, and/or subject matter. Your project plan describes what you are wanting to create for your project. This is not a final plan, as your project will organically change if needed throughout your process but you need to have a solid starting point and an idea of what you are wanting to tackle.
Part 2: Experimentation & Process Pages (Week 2, 3 & Beginning of 4)
Experimentation: In the beginning stages of your project, you will need to experiment and find the best medium for your project. Many times you will have already decided which medium you will be choosing but even then, there will need to be techniques and ideas to flush out. Make sure you follow the Process Page Checklist to help you navigate what you need to have completed for the process pages and ways to experiment with the different mediums. Make sure you are using your artist as inspiration throughout your experimentation process.
Process Pages: Your experimentations should be documented in your process pages. These process pages will not end until you have completed the piece of artwork. They should include every step layed out in the Process Page Checklist. This should fill multiple pages of your process page with sketches, writing about your processes, samples, and photos. Make sure you are consistently relating your processes back to your artist and finding comparisons and differences.
Part 3: Finishing Your Work & Self Reflection (End of Week 4)
Documentation: All work needs to be professionally photographed. This means using the lighting setup and backdrops or light box. These photos must be uploaded on the class flash drive and Google Classroom. (note: This will happen when we return to the classroom later this year. please try and take as clean as a photo with nice lighting as you can at home.)
Turn In Work with Rubric: Artwork needs to be turned into the marked slots behind the teachers desk where the IB flat files are. If your work is 3D, it must be placed on the shelves above the ceramic throwing wheels. When you turn in your work, it must be accompanied by an IB Rubric marked with the individual scores you feel you deserve for this work. Note: this is not going to be your final grade but the teacher does use it to better assess the work.
Self Reflection: After work is turned in, each student must complete a self reflection of their work. This reflection can be found in the Google Classroom. Follow the directions in the Google Form. This reflection will resemble your critique you completed of your artist at the beginning of the project. You need to describe and analyze 3-5 different elements and principles of art and postmodern art. You will describe the function and purpose of your artwork. You will talk about how culture has influenced your artwork. Lastly, you will give a generalized self reflection about what went well and where do you need growth.
